Corporate authors (companies or organisational) names

When entering corporate authors, put a comma after the name:

Ireland. Department of Education,

Apple Computer Inc.,

This will ensure that the entire name is treated as a first name, so that the author appears correctly in your reference.

If your corporate author name includes a comma in the name itself, use two commas in place of the first comma:

Department of XY,, University of XY

EndNote treats this as a last name followed by a blank first name. Then, everything after the (blank) first name is appended, including a second comma in the name. The formatted result is the corporate name with the comma in place.

Secondary referencing or how to cite a work within a work

Hi folks,

A question which often arises is how do you quote something which is quoted in another work or secondary referencing? Secondary referencing is when one author is referring to the work of another and the primary source is not available. Try if possible to get a hold of the original work. If, however, this is not possible then the rule is as follows:

Do not cite a work that you have not read. If you read an article which refers to a
different article, cite the article you have read.

In text citation=
(Taylor 1991 cited in Buckroyd 1996)

In Bibliography at back of Thesis=
Buckroyd, J. (1996) Eating Your Heart Out:Understanding and Overcoming Eating Disorders, 2nd ed., London: Vermilion.

How to reference Official Publications in Harvard

Official publications can cause major headaches when referencing. I cannot stress enough that you must always check the guidelines provided by your supervisor as they may have their own preferred referencing style. There are many variations in referencing as you may already have noticed while conducting your research.

In general, however, EU and Irish government material can be referenced as follows:

EU Directives

Citation Order:
· Institutional origin (e.g.Council Directive (EC))
· Legislation Number and date
· Title
· Official Journal (italics)
· OJ number and page numbers

Government Publications

Citation Order:
· Ireland (fullstop)
· Name of Government Department
· Year of Publication
· Title (italics)
· Place of Publication: Publisher

Example: In text: (Ireland. Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, 2000)

Reference List:
Ireland. Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. (2000) White paper on a framework for supporting voluntary activity and for developing the relationship between the state and the community and voluntary sector. Dublin: The Stationery office.
